WHILE Perikatan Nasional (PN) professed to have the numbers backing Muhyiddin Yassin to be the next prime minister, Barisan Nasional’s component parties, MIC and MCA, have said that they were undecided on who to cooperate with to form the next government.
This was revealed by the respective party presidents, Wee Ka Siong and SA Vigneswaran, following a BN supreme council meeting.
“We have to look at all possibilities. As of now, there is no final decision. We will make a collective decision tomorrow,” Wee, whose MCA party has two parliamentary seats, told reporters today.
Vigneswaran said that MIC, which currently has a single parliamentary seat, claimed that the decision by BN as a whole would have more significance than a single party.
“MIC only has one seat. So, it is more significant if we make a consensus decision through BN,” he told reporters.
Vigneswaran also said that they are still undecided between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PN.,
“We will follow BN (supreme council) and the decision is likely to be made tomorrow,” he added.
Earlier, Hamzah Zainuddin claimed PN had submitted more than 112 statutory declarations from lawmakers to support Muhyiddin’s appointment as prime minister.
The PN secretary-general said the number of SDs was more than the required 112 needed under the Federal Constitution to appoint a prime minister to form a government.
PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said the coalition was working to form a unity government with BN for the country’s stability.
The PKR president also dismissed PN’s claim of having the support of 112 lawmakers. PN won 73 seats in Saturday’s general election and needs to form alliances with other coalitions to set up a new government.
PH, which won 82 seats, is also undertaking a similar move.
PH and Barisan Nasional, which has 30 seats, held talks of working together with the final outcome yet to be officially made known. – November 21, 2022.
